I EXPECT APOLOGIES FOR THIS OPTICAL ILLUSION.
andrew / 2005-10-06 11:32:37I agree, it's blue! Never thought of it as purple!
saucy99 / 2005-10-06 11:39:55i'm really sorry. it's not just purple, it's lavender.
kim / 2005-10-06 11:40:04It isn't lavender! Look at the third arrow, PURE blue, right in the middle of the blue spectrum. JUST BLUE JUST BLUE JUST BLUE.
andrew / 2005-10-06 11:42:11I've found it looks rather purply on certain monitors, and rather bluey on other (better) monitors... maybe it's "blurple". Or "plue".
geekslut / 2005-10-06 12:23:41Yeah, on my old monitor at home, it was most definitely a cute lavender color. Which drove me nuts because it made the site look all too cutesy. But on my spankin' new laptop, definitely baby blue. Which leaves me still wondering . . . what's with the pastels, yo?
Monica / 2005-10-06 12:33:50I've always thought it was blue, but I will tell you, a couple of days ago? For several hours? It was grey. GREY. I'm crappin you negative: G-R-E-Y. What was up with That?
eva / 2005-10-06 13:00:59Of course it's blue -- it's never been any shade of purple or lavender. . .although the little "cat" like people on the main page are a little gay. I still heart them though.
catie / 2005-10-06 13:42:57I have a professional grade color true monitor and I'm sorry, it's Lavender people!!!
Kat / 2005-10-06 13:45:14But wait, so does the third arrow in my gif point to lavender??
andrew / 2005-10-06 14:04:55haha p.s. i hope i don't sound angry or anything haha, i probably do, but i really just am confused!
andrew / 2005-10-06 14:05:27It's purple.
inafunk / 2005-10-06 14:30:15I wish it was grey or like a hunter green. I hella like saying hunter green.
The bug / 2005-10-06 14:39:40It was grey for a short time yeah, yup. But then it didn't look as good when all over the site as it did in photoshop and whatnot, just didn't work. Okay so for the people saying lavender and purple, I am just confused, did you see the color picker where it showed it as blue?
andrew / 2005-10-06 14:43:22BLUE! No, red. No -- aaaah!<br><br>Sorry, I'm just that cheesy. I will find the Monty Python reference in EVERYTHING, dammit! (And for the record, I thought the grey was icky.)
Meany / 2005-10-06 15:24:30i'm very color-oriented and, although not a professional web designer, i do write html for my job on a weekly basis. and i am very fussy about my colors. i've totally had dark grays and bold aquas come out looking black on various monitors, which is why it's good when designing a website to view from a variety of monitors. (on a side note, i've noticed that the world of the internet does not acknowledge the existence of bold blue-green. it's either too wimpy/grayish or it's black.)
kim / 2005-10-06 15:48:17I'm a graphic designer so let me clear this up for you. It's PURPLE! *laughs* If you look at the colour in CMYK you will see that the amount of cyan and the amount of magenta are almost the same percentage... this in turn would give you a more true purple color. ;)
inafunk / 2005-10-06 16:20:27Ha, ok, I am confused though, I know what CMYK is, but I don't get what you're getting at exactly.. I mean I do but don't. I mean, if you look at the color picker picture I have there, you can see it's pretty much the purest blue there is, combined with a bunch of white, for a light blue. I maintain that people are thinking it looks purple because it's beside a lot of lighter blues, and it's an optical illusion.
andrew / 2005-10-06 16:27:45maybe you should put up a screenshot of your idea of purple as found in the color picker.
mike / 2005-10-06 16:50:20huh? it's green.
kiwi / 2005-10-06 17:21:37This is the flip flop version of our talk in Science last year. "The sky is violet, not blue" I just don't care to look too far into this blue/purple ordeal. They're so close, it doesn't matter anyhow.
Shawne / 2005-10-06 19:55:06It's blue on my current computer, and I never thought it was purple :P But when I got my new laptop, it shows up as purple.
Niz / 2005-10-06 19:55:30Actually to be totally honest it would be more blue than purple because there is a higher level of cyan in the colour... so I guess technically you are right. ;) The magenta would make it more and more purple as you add more to the cyan. When I select the "purple" colour and then the purest blue from that pallet I still see the purple as just that though. *shrugs* I don't there is any real right answer. Who is to say it's not really green like Kiwi says... we all see things differently.
inafunk / 2005-10-06 20:16:10I'mwith the lavender crowd as well as the why is this so girly crowd, but then again it IT a diary site. haha
Erika / 2005-10-06 20:52:31lilac
Julie / 2005-10-06 21:28:30i've always thought it was purple. the old colour was flesh.
lisa / 2005-10-06 23:09:13Can we just call it "blurple" and be done with it? Plus, that's way more fun to say.
Meany / 2005-10-06 23:11:47Ummm...I'm pretty sure I never thought it was purple. It's definately a very unenjoyable shade of wussie blue.
Jessica / 2005-10-07 01:40:50...I feel the need to back away slowly lol. But really, It never looked purple to me but things look a totally different color on my husbands computer :P . Plus, he is colorblind too lol.
Neda / 2005-10-07 02:52:15DIARYLAND is SO PURPLE guy! As if a dude can talk about what a colour is! They are all colorblind. Diaryland is about as blue as the SUN!!! wtf? When my mom was having me redesign her website she even said "How about making the background like..... diaryland purple?"
eBeth / 2005-10-07 09:08:07It's periwinkle
cosmic / 2005-10-07 10:00:21How about describing it as a light lavender blue? :-) Here is an interesting website for color names with the RGB values. http://www.aion-needlecrafts.co.uk/info/dmcval2.htm
Melody / 2005-10-07 11:16:40yeh, i think kim is right, it's lavendar. if you wanted to go with blue, maybe you should have picked a color that RESEMBLES it more closely
chris / 2005-10-07 13:46:16andrews. i think im in LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOVE with you.
anners / 2005-10-07 13:52:27Yeah, Chris, I think you aren missing my point, that it does resemble it. To me. Apparently not to a lot of people. And then I put the color picker up to prove it was blue, which didn't seem to actually sway anyone haha. Anyway, I don't actually CARE if it's blue or purple, I just was seriously very surprised that anyone thought it was purple. Because it is blue. And resembles blue. I need to put up a new diary entry like PRONTO before this discussion drives everyone insane haha.
andrew / 2005-10-07 13:59:33Rob sent me, very very funny post! And it can be whatever color you say it is...I'm stepping away from that one carefully :)
Mona / 2005-10-07 18:01:27i now look at diaryland in an entirely new light .. well, shade. ha.
anisha. / 2005-10-08 20:01:01I'm going to have to go with Cosmic. I've always thought it was a light periwinkle. Plue is a nice shade though ;)
Dana / 2005-10-08 23:38:27okay, whoa, before we jump on this whole purple/blue bandwagon (it IS blue, btw -- adjust for brightness and contrast if necessary, you freaky, freaky people), can someone agknowledge the total creepiness of lisa's comment? "yeah, the old color was flesh." i would say peach and brown. lisa prefers "flesh." icky.
cutething / 2005-10-09 11:34:35Ha, I didn't reply to that flesh thing only because I didn't want to start any more color controversies haha!
andrew / 2005-10-09 16:18:35I have always thought it as lavender color too! Maybe it depends on the monitor.
Grace / 2005-10-11 00:07:08I guess it's kinda ...erm...blue?
time2 / 2005-10-12 17:01:46Always has been blue. Always WILL be blue. (Unless you change it or something, at which point I will still call it blue.) xx
Sarah / 2005-10-12 18:23:03I've always seen it as light blue and pale yellow... on every monitor I've ever used across the country. Lavendar? Flesh?? No way.
Rach (Cookie) / 2005-10-13 16:18:12finally the blue agree-ers come out, woo
andrew / 2005-10-14 13:07:29I don't really use diaryland but anytime I've logged in I've always thought of it as purple. And even when you show it to me from the blue 'section' I still see it as purple. I think the more pertinent question is what is Bbqdelish all about? That sounds like a fun diary- why can't I go there?
Cananopie / 2005-10-16 10:58:15Ha oh yeah, bbqdelish - that was a testing diary I had open and then when I posted that screenshot, noone actually noticed I don't think, but then I started doing some tests on it and sending some posts and pictures to it via phone, so I wound up locking it. So uhh, it sounds fun but it's not fun really!
andrew / 2005-10-18 12:21:40Maybe it looks purple because it is doing the same thing like when paint drys. Or maybe because it is a bigger area. If it was smaller it would like darken and what-not. Just a thought. (Maybe not a good one and I am the only one that understands it.)
Lisa Marie / 2005-10-19 14:01:08Let's not forget about indigo. If we think back to primary school for a moment and the day we learned about ROYGBIV, indigo seems like the obvious middle ground to squelch this burning debate. Anyone with me?
dan / 2005-10-19 16:45:46Nah, people are too eager to find a middle ground everyone can agree with, but it's not indigo really is it? Actually I forget what indigo is, isn't it light blue? Okay maybe it is indigo! Colours are crazy!
andrew / 2005-10-19 16:47:45AH HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAA!!!! What, if people think it's purple does that make you a girly-man? tee hee hee. It is blue, but I really don't care if you make it brown with yellow polka dots.
zoot / 2005-10-21 14:08:44Absolutely positively Purple! I had everyone in the office vote! Sorry man, you might have been aiming for blue, but it's purple!
egg / 2005-10-21 14:24:54Technically, the colour in question is a shade of purple. The RGB colour numbers Andrew has posted show that although there is 100% addition of blue (255 out of 255), there is 77% red and 80% green. When light is mixed in these proportions, the resulting colour is a shade of purple, although it appears in the blue range of colours. This is basic light physics and I'm surprised more people haven't pointed out this obvious point. It has nothing to do with CMYK colour combining that is used in painting. When you get down to it, this colour is closer to white than blue. You would only have to add 57 points of red, and 49 points of green to get pure white, while you would have to remove all 198 points of red, and 206 points of blue to get a pure shade of blue.
